Bob Beauchamp: Sebastopol, California, United States; I began my architectural career in the heyday of the southern California midcentury modern movement, working in the offices of such greats as Frank Gehry, John Lautner and A. Quincy Jones. Over my 7+ decades as an architect, contractor and professor of architectural design, I have developed a profound appreciation for the precepts of functionalism. Here I reflect on that history and the ways that theory and practice interact as the architect addresses the pragmatics of design and building in the real world.
